Christmas

“Glaedelig Jul og Godt Nytar fra Denmark” (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Denmark) where preparations for the holidays begin weeks in advance, beginning with a rush to buy candles of all sizes and colors to place in homemade wreaths before the first day of Advent. Hearts have become the theme motif of a Danish Christmas-hearts for the tree, mobiles and table decorations – that impart the feeling a Danish Christmas is from the heart. The Christmas month begins on December 1 when children open their first Christmas token; everyday thereafter they open a package until Christmas Eve when the last is opened. The diminutive “Julenisse”, similar to Santa Claus except in size, is given a bowl of rice and milk on Christmas Eve.
